Your First 6 Weeks Postpartum: What Healing Really Looks Like

Congratulations, mama. The first six weeks postpartum are a time of deep healing—physically, emotionally, and hormonally.

After delivery, your body begins repairing itself. You may experience:

  • Vaginal bleeding (lochia) for up to 4–6 weeks
  • Uterine cramping as your uterus shrinks
  • Perineal soreness or C-section incision discomfort
  • Hormonal shifts that affect mood and energy

This is not the time to “bounce back.” It’s a time to rest and recover.

Focus on:

  • Gentle hygiene (a peri bottle is your best friend)
  • Managing swelling with cooling pads
  • Wearing soft, breathable underwear
  • Asking for help—your recovery matters just as much as your baby

If you experience heavy bleeding, fever, or worsening pain, contact your provider.

Healing isn’t linear. Be patient with your body—it just did something incredible.
