Breastfeeding in the First Weeks: What’s Normal (and What’s Not)

Breastfeeding in the First Weeks: What’s Normal (and What’s Not)

Breastfeeding is a learning process—for both you and your baby.

In the first few days, your body produces colostrum, a nutrient-rich early milk. Around day 3–5, your milk “comes in,” and your breasts may feel full or engorged.

Common experiences:

  • Tender nipples (should improve with proper latch)
  • Frequent feeding (8–12 times a day is normal)
  • Cluster feeding, especially at night

Signs things are going well:

  • Baby has regular wet diapers
  • You hear swallowing during feeds
  • Baby seems satisfied after feeding

If you feel sharp pain, cracked nipples, or your baby isn’t gaining weight, don’t wait—reach out for support.

Remember: fed is best. Whether breastfeeding, pumping, or supplementing, what matters most is a healthy baby and a supported mom.
